Sister Alice Reckamp

S Alice Reckamp

January 29, 1939 - August 13, 2021

Alice Coletta Reckamp was born to Margaret (Burkemper) and Claude Reckamp on January 29, 1939, in Evanston, IL. She was baptized into Christ at St. Mary’s Church in Buffalo Grove, IL, on February 12, 1939. She was one of the thirteen children born of this love. Alice grew in age and wisdom and the hearing of her mother’s stories of her aunt, Sister Marcella, who was a Wheaton Franciscan Sister. These stories attracted Alice to join the Wheaton Franciscan Sisters in 1955. She professed her final vows as a Wheaton Franciscan Sister in 1963.

Alice was educated at St. Francis High School in Wheaton, IL, Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI, Manhattanville College, NY, and Hospital Ofir Lyola, Brazil. These experiences prepared her for the 44 years of ministry as a medical technologist in Brazil where she taught and trained young women to do this work. She also worked with the Aspirants in the formation of the Brazil Region. She taught the Aspirants how to live together in Community, to cook, to bake, and many other things related to everyday life. Her tender heart’s needs and age called her back to Wheaton in 2016.

Alice spent her last years of living, loving, praying, and serving at Our Lady of the Angels in Wheaton. After her return from Brazil, she and Sr. Martha served as sacristans in Our Lady of the Angels Chapel. Alice dealt with several weakening physical issues, all accompanied by her loving smile, her dancing eyes, and all her inner and prayerful being. These loving gifts to us, her community, were shown through her deep inner and prayerful being Sister among us. We are grateful.

“Gentle Woman, Holy Sister, Wise Lover, You Are in Peace!”
